The use of technical jargon sometimes creates more confusion than clarification. Some employees think that going technical will make them sound more knowledgeable and impressive. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

If you’re a jargon-loving person, take note.

Your colleagues may misinterpret your preference for technical terms as a reflection of a know-it-all attitude. You may even come off as someone who thinks everyone else is beneath you. It would be better to use words that everyone else can understand and relate to. By using the appropriate words, you can get your message across loud and clear.

Keep in mind too that clouding your words with jargon may also have negative implications on the company. It is too easy for your original message to get lost in translation, especially for staff members who are not well-versed in technicalities. As an effect, tasks may not be accomplished and messages gone undelivered.

At the end of the day, actions speak louder than words. Your big talk would not amount to anything if it is not supported by credible, meaningful action. You will just be wasting company time and resources. Be clear and straightforward. You don’t have to use big words to impress your colleagues. You only need to be clear in your message and follow through with the appropriate action. That’s how you impress people.

If you’re still at a loss for words, perhaps it’s time to sign up for AHEAD Professional Network’s English Proficiency programs. At AHEADPro, we will make sure that you use the right words all the time!
